It helps coaches when parents support the goals and approach.  For parents to do this coaches need to:

  1. Align with the objectives

  2. Believe in the strategy; and

  3. Know how their support can help you achieve the objectives.

This guide provides an example of how to do this through the parent kick-off email.

Dear Parents – I am beyond excited to lead your kids through the upcoming season.  As you know, I love to coach, and I love seeing the kids thrive.  With your support, we can achieve a Winning Season, as described below.  Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns or comments.  Our alignment is key to our success.

A “Winning” Season Defined:

  1. Your kids will love soccer significantly more than they do right now, tapping into what is truly interesting to your individual child.  There is so much that they can find interesting about soccer, and we will help them find it and lean into it

  2. Your kids will meaningfully develop their soccer skills.  As a team we will focus on the following, and each kid will have development tailored to their needs:

    1. How to strike a ball with strength and accuracy

    2. How to take a touch to give them options for where to play the ball

    3. How to stand up attackers while on defense

  3. Your kids will learn to play in games closer to the best of their ability, including:

    1. Reduce fear that prevents giving their best and performing their best

    2. Increase concrete confidence based on deep belief in specific abilities

    3. Learn to play aggressively, compete and with maximum effort

  4. Your kids will learn skills that will help them thrive in life

    1. Be kind to themselves and to each other when mistakes happen

Our Strategy for Achieving These Goals:

  1. No negative reactions. Fear of mistakes kills development and performance.

  2. Compassionate honesty.  When they make a mistake or succeed.

  3. Promotive feedback.  What gets promoted gets repeated.

  4. Deeply understand the players.  So I can know what is standing in their way.

  5. Accountability.  If they want to get better, they must put in the effort and time.

What You Can Do to Support Our Goals:

  1. RSVP: Let me know as far in advance as possible, so I can plan.

  2. Your Kid: Let me know what is going on, how they learn, what they fear.

  3. Let Me Coach: I have a plan.  If you have questions, please ask me.  If you try to coach, either on the sidelines, in the car home or at home without us aligning first, it can get in the way of what we are working to achieve.

  4. Reduce Fear: Let your kid know that you simply enjoy watching them play, win or lose, succeed or fail.  I’ll handle the motivation.  You reduce the fear.  They will develop better, faster and play better.

Please print this and put it on your fridge at home.  With alignment on this plan, we will achieve an incredible season for the kids, and enjoy it ourselves.  If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please reach out early and often.

Thank you,

Coach Danny
